Wilcove Signs to be removed3.17.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 26th Sep 2007
Cllr John Ault, County Councillor for the Rame peninsula, has today welcomed news that Cornwall County Council is to remove the 30mph signs from Wilcove, a village in his division, following a long campaign by local residents and himself. Cllr Ault polled all the residents of the village last year to ask for a clear view on the plans for the signs, and over 70% supported their removal. Over the last two years residents have raised with John the somewhat haphazard and numerous nature of the signs, and the absurd increase to the national speed limit only yards from the river Tamar and when joining an almost impassable green lane. The objections raised by residents of the village were based on the 'urbanisation' of the rural area with the excessive use of signage and the almost impossibility of going much over 30mph down the lanes of the village anyway. Commenting John Ault said; 'Local residents have, for a long time, told me this is the top issue in the village and one that needed addressing. The news that highways officers at the county council have accepted the views of local people is a good sign that people can push for change in their local area. People should not be afraid to use their own common sense when standing up for their village, and this is an excellent example of that.' 'Local people have opposed the clutter of too many signs and the people of Wilcove have voted overwhelmingly for this change, and the Liberal Democrat County Council has listened.'
