TORY U-TURN: VOTE AGAINST LIFE-SAVING BUDGET2.30.00pm GMT Fri 25th Jan 2008
Conservatives at Caradon District Council last week voted against vital funding for lifeguard services in Whitsand Bay. Before the Liberal Democrats took control of Caradon District Council in May, the previous administration had decided to stop funding the life-saving services in the Bay. Last summer newly Liberal Democrat controlled Caradon announced a review into the funding, and last week the Liberal Democrat budget put £40,000 into the lifeguard service to support the work done by the RNLI and Whitsand Bay Lifesaving Club. All Conservatives present voted against the budget. Roger Jones, Deputy Leader of Caradon Council, responsible for the budget said: "Liberal Democrats' hard work has pulled off extra money for Whitsand Bay. We are delivering for local people, whilst the Conservatives are only interested in playing politics. This is yet another example of Conservative double standards - promising one thing to local people and voting against it up at the council." "I can only assume that Tory Propspective Parliamentary Candidates Sheryll Murray was too embarrassed to turn up to see her party vote against funding she claims to support."
