Council Experience I have been a Parish Councillor for 4 years for Deviock PC. I have been a Caradon District Councillor since a by-election in September 2005. At Caradon I have chaired the Parks and Open Spaces Task Group, served as Vice Chairman on the Planning and Local Economy Panel, as well as serving on various other committees and representing Caradon on Cornwall Sustainable Energy Partnership and Cornwall Countryside Access Forum. Professional Experience I have been involved in farming all my life, currently at Trerieve, as tenants of Cornwall County Council, where we produce organic beef and vegetables. The farm is in Countryside Stewardship to encourage wildlife. I am also currently studying Agriculture, Ecology and the Environment at Plymouth University. Involvement in the Local Community I help with organizing Jazz in the Park in Seaton every May. I also supported St Nicholas School, which my 4 sons all attended. I campaign nationally on behalf of Organo-phoshate (sheep dip) sufferers, and help promote Organic Livestock Farmers of Cornwall and Devon. Important Local Issues With 4 sons, I realise the problems of affordable housing, which is compounded by second homes. I believe the planning process should be used to protect our environment, whilst permitting sufficient extra housing and economic sustainability for our communities. Council Experience I am a long serving member of Caradon District and Cornwall County Councils and have chaired various committees. Involvement in the Local Community I am a trustee of the SITA Trust, a funding scheme for community and environmental projects around landfill sites, and a Director of the Cornwall Rural Community Council. Important Local Issues After the success of our long campaign for a Dobwalls bypass I will be pushing to secure local footpaths, tree replanting and landscaping of the area following the bypass works. I will also be campaigning to improve local playing field provision. Council Experience I have represented Liskeard North as a Town Councillor since 2000 and District Councillor since 2003. In May 2005 I was elected to the County Council representing Liskeard and District. At the County Council I am currently Chairman of the Community Policy Development and Scrutiny Committee and have chaired and taken part in a number of single issue panels including Legal Advice and Economic Delivery. Professional Experience As a qualified accountant I worked in London and overseas and on returning home to Liskeard worked in local government as Financial Services Manager at the District Council before entering local politics. Involvement in the Local Community In addition to Councils I also work with the Abbeyfield Liskeard Society, grant funding company Viridor Credits Caradon and Menheniot Parish Council. My voluntary work includes Treasurer of Cornwall Rural Housing Association, Director of Cornwall Community Land Trust, Trustee of Cornwall Rural Community Council, Treasurer of Liskeard and Looe Methodist Circuit and Liskeard and Looe Rotary. I have also been a school governor and CAB Board Member. Important Local Issues As a councillor I will focus on improving the quality of life for residents by offering quality services and environment. This includes tackling vandalism and anti social behaviour such as litter and improving the town centre and facilities for residents. Residents want good shopping and entertainment facilities and parking fees set to encourage people into town centre and traffic management are key to this. Job creation and affordable housing are also key issues and the new development framework will be key in attracting both. I have lived in the local area all my life and care about Liskeard and its future. I am very keen to help the residents of Liskeard North with any problems and to build on the success of Councillors Tony Powell, Roger Jones and Jenny Kettles. Professional Experience I am currently the Marketing Manager for a marketing company based in Liskeard. Important Local Issues Our recent residents survey revealed antisocial behaviour as a key local issue. As a councillor I will focus on how this problem can be tackled through the provision of more leisure time activities for young people in the community. Council Experience I joined Liskeard Town Council in 2005 and have been actively involved in promoting road safety, particularly around schools. Professional Experience I started my career in London in the mid 60s and remained in retail as assistant to the Merchandise/Sales Director until returning to Cornwall in the mid 70s. I then took up a post as a Senior Executive with the House of Fraser for approximately 20 years. Involvement in the Local Community I was recently involved with local schools and their goveners, Traffic Wardens and the County Travel Plans Officer to create road safety measures designed to improve conditions for children, parents and residents alike. Important Local Issues As a councillor I am keen to focus on issues such as road safety, litter and reducing the problems of criminal damage and petty crime. I would like to see an improvement in the community generally and an attempt to make the town a safer and happier place in which to live. The good old days have long since gone, but there's no harm in trying to make Liskeard as safe as it was some time ago. My professional experience also includes 10 years as an officer within social housing. Involvement in the Local Community As a local retail grocer I was involved in caring for older and disabled members of the community by making home deliveries and giving general assistance. I am also a member of a local drama group. Important Local Issues As a councillor I will continue to promote the continuation of local services such as the shop and the Post Office and attempt to maintain the local transport service to at least current levels. I believe in a considered approach to planning which embraces the whole community. Other important local issues are crime and anti social behaviour, cleanliness of streets and public areas, and dog fouling. Phil Beamont has lived in Saltash since 1983 with his partner Joyce Mepsted who is currently one of the towns County Councillors. He works locally on building maintenance and as a carpenter. His interests are building wooden rowing skiffs and playing traditional music on the button accordion. Phil says "Saltash is a great place to live but some of the basic services need attention.
